We concluded our November series yesterday. And although we didn't have a chance to answer every question that was asked, we are attempting to answer some others that were asked in our blogs this week. So here is one of them that was asked on a connect card... "Who wrote the Bible and how do they know what happened?" So here are a few thoughts on this:
First, you may want to listen to a couple podcasts we did at The Journey to hear some more in-depth thoughts. Check out a talk we did on the Bible in November 2009 or Is the Bible Reliable? in November 2011. But to offer a few short thoughts...the Bible was written by over 40 authors over a period of 1500 years. They wrote down what God wanted them to. (2 Timothy 3:16). God wanted to communicate many things to the people of that day and to us. So the authors God used wrote from the context of what was happening in their culture during the time they were alive. They knew what was happening because they experienced it themselves. Also, the stories found in the Bible were handed down from generation to generation. The Israelites (of the Old Testament) took their heritage and family history very serious. They knew where they came from, what God had done in the past, and their family history. It was more important for them to know all those things of their history and get it right than people in our culture today. (Check out Deuteronomy 6 and Joshua 1:8.) It is also encouraging to note that with so many authors over 1500 years, they are communicating one central message...and that is the message of Jesus. The Old Testament points to the coming of Jesus. The New Testament is about the life of Jesus and about those that were following Jesus.
